The Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground is a newly-renovated student community space at Boston University. Kenneth Elmore, dean of students at BU, said Thurman “felt a connection to nature and talked a lot about the importance of listening.” These aspects of Thurman’s passions were combined in the unique design of The Lisa C. Williams Listening Room, named after a donor who has established three endowments at BU, and dedicated to Erin Edwards, a late BU student who was heavily involved in the HTC, to “provide a quiet space for students to meditate and relax.”

Lisa Williams has been called a “latter-day Harriet Tubman,” for good reason: she has made it her mission to counter child sex trafficking and exploitation. To date, she has helped spare the lives of 230 girls and 14 boys through intensive rehabilitation programs supported by her not-for-profit, Circle of Friends: Celebrating Life, Inc., which she founded in 1999 “to bring women together to raise money and awareness and to dismantle the social injustices that render them more susceptible to violence and the criminal justice system.”
